Star Struck gettin' burnished

Posted by Rabbit (Richmond, United States) on 30 September 2008 in Art & Design.

So you may wonder what the heck i'm doing with that metal dentist tool in this picture. I'm burnishing. Which means I rubbed this entire piece with this little metal thing. I looked for other ones a bit bigger & even searched for a little metal spoon, but this one seemed to be the best because my work is still pretty small. Even a small spoon proved to be to big to get inbetween certain angles of this piece.

Today I need to go glaze the inside of this, with the lovely matte black color, as well as maybe add a little bit of shiney black glaze to the outside of this one.

I was hoping to send off my work to this World Ceramic Exposition Foundation in Korea. Its free to enter, however, I've looked up sending my work overseas to them & oh my goodness. I dont' think I can afford it right now. The prices were around $200 to send my work to them. I am not allowed to use the Post Office *I've read several places that the Post Office charges the receipient about 1/2 of what It cost for me to send the package.* So even tho It would be super cool to try & go for it. I wouldn't know what to do if I actually got accepted into the darn thing. Jeeez entering in shows is not cheap. I see why artist charge so much for a piece of artwork.

Just to give you a small list:

$50 Materials (mostly because I don't waste anything & I recyle as many things as (cans - to make my pinholes) I can to save on cost.
$30-40 Entry Fee
$30-50 Shipping (thats just for US and my work is small)
30-40% commission fee if the work sells.

So lets see
$110 - for fees on ONE piece of work for ONE show.
*that figure is not including my time to make them which I spend several days doing*
I would like to offer my pieces to the public for about $150 to $175 I suppose... However, In an art gallery that would mean I could put the price at $250 and with 30% commission - - -

So
$250
-75
-110
= $65

hummmm I suppose for a show I need to raise the price - ugh.
None-the-less when I start to sell them I would like to only charge a small amount. I will make the price hopefully affordable for someone who would like to have an interesting piece of art that can be used to take pictures. *sigh*

So yes I'm very disappointed about not entering the show, but really don't see how it is feasible to send my work that far away. I will just have to wait for this show in 2 more years & hopefully have more funds to enter a show like this.
