Which do you think?

I would like an opinion - choose which background you think is better for taking digital slides of my work. I decided what better of a camera to use than dear ol La for he has the perfect tones already of gray and white. I figured it would make for a more true test than using a colored piece.

Today is the 1st interview day... I've got to sort through my closet and see what I have to wear. I think I may wear a skirt today and pants tomorrow. Or if i can fit my fanny into pants for both days I will, but lately my fanny has proved otherwise with nearly all my dress pants O_O eeep!

Class starts next week and well if i land one of these interviews I will have to cancel class - since its a day class and probably will be hard to ask my new employer - ummm yeah could I come into work on Wednesdays at noon? maybe after I've been there for a year I could build up the nerve to ask that...

I think the pale background is the better bet on the index pics . . because it will emphasize the outline while still retaining detail. Y've lit them very well, too. Good luck on the interviews . . wear a smile with whatever !

I like the white, it doesn't affect the colors of your work, it's just there for us to see in all it's beauty :)

Oh Gosh I may mess thoughts up here but I tend to like the gray. Truthfully for display purposes white is often used not to distract. But in this case for some reason the white makes the piece have more shadow.
The gray is not a harsh solid like the white and there are some variations of gray tones which add softness that is why I went with it.

I agree with Ronnie 2 cents wear a smile, that is most important. The best of luck to you in the interview.

@Barbara: It is ok - be honest in your choice, I like the variety. See 80% of the sculpture work I see photographed is gray OR with a gradient background one that fades from nearly white to a black - however, I really don't like the gradient background.

I think the gray works very well for this piece. The color looks more pure to me. I actually like the slight gradient the sweep of the gray offers. When I did a ceramic portfolio for a local artist we looked through trade magazines, books, and brochures from shows to see some of the techniques employed in photographing sculptures and ceramics and I noticed gradient (even more pronounced than this) was often used. It was surprising to me but those photos somehow seemed more memorable than some of the others. I think it added to the drama of some of the pieces.

A neutral gray would be my choice between the two. When taking photos of rock specimens we always put in a black background. Shoot on black velvet, select the black in photoshop (which isn't always totally black) and then do a full black fill - makes the specimens jump out of the image :-)
