Pit Firing Step 1Posted by Rabbit (Richmond, United States) on 11 August 2008 in Art & Design. Driving on a fantastic Saturday morning. I arrive just a bit late - at 10:30 instead of 10 because of my awesome talent in missing one of the turns on the way there. None the less I arrive and I'm greeted by many smiles and a couple of familiar faces. I see some of the "pit fires" going already. Its exhilarating. Since I've never pit fired before I ask for advice on what to fill my closed forms to make them black on the inside. Sawdust was the answer! So as we see in this picture above - my white stoneware piece is filled with sawdust. Then I wrap it meticulously (as described later by a peer) with 18 and 24 gauge copper wire. (you must forgive me for not taking a picture of the piece wrapped in the copper wire) since I arrived late I was working so hard on getting my pieces prepared for the fire and needed to do so in a HURRY since they wanted to start. I do have more pictures of other parts of the process so don't fret.
