So the piece on the right is my pinhole camera - for some reason i do not remember the exact title but i know its has the words Among the Flowers. That may be the whole title, but as i said i just can't remember right now. I've been working so much on making new pieces since i had a whole batch get ruined :(
The pink color of the mug on the left - is suppose to be the color of the pinhole camera on the right. This is from the first firing called the bisque fire. There is no glaze on either of them. Basically what i'm saying is BOTH these pieces should be the same pink color.
Besides for being over fired i also couldn't get the top off the sucker... neither the pinhole shutter or the lid... i'll have to take another picture so you can see the different pieces. Anyway i ask my teacher about this and she said hang on let me get a board. She goes gets a board and then taps the lid several times - tap tap tap and then rotates the object tap tap tap and rotates again going all the way around the pot, she hands it to me then says - here you do this i'll be right back with another board.... so i continue the tap tap tap method and she comes back with a different board - does the tap tap tap and a bap... the lid come undone! wow, my eyes get big - and then she gently taps out the pinhole shutter cap to.
Then she hands me the boards - i notice they are 2 different weights (they are roughly the same size tho) but the density is different and she says you notice the lighter board worked in getting the lid off? i said yeah? (with a questioning look) she looks back shes like yup and i don't know why - sometimes you just need to try something different.
New things learned, rabbit

Hello Rabbit! nice confusing story, or my english lacks a little.... The colour of the over-fired beauty is fantastic. Dutch mustard with seeds. keep on tapping.

Wow! Great story and love the shot. So what you are saying the speckled pinhole camera is suppose to look like the mug. Hmmm I am confused, the camera looks like it is glazed with the speckle effect. Both are great pieces and of course I always enjoy your photos and stories.

@Barbara: yes - the camera is suppose to be the color of the mug... both are not glazed yet. 1st firing the brown clay should look pink.
I was actually going to comment on how I liked the speckles on the Pinhole camera and was going to ask you how you did that, and why it didn't have a shiny glazey look to it...and now I know why. Interesting. Can you glaze it now and try firing it or is it pretty much ruined? It looks neat anyway.

@cabbagehead: well - my teacher is letting me experiment with how well the glaze is taking (drying on it) to the insides of some mugs that were also over fired. It took almost 2 hours for the glaze to dry. (usually it takes 5 minutes) but none the less it did dry...
SO the most important thing is - i would really like to glaze the inside black - so that i could still use it as a camera. Everyone loves the speckled outside just as it is... i also thought about just putting a tiny bit of glaze on the shutter cap & the handles - like maybe just a clear glaze so that the shutter cap and handles are shiny and the rest is matte color.
Your blog is such a happy place to visit. Not just the intriguing images but your detailed narrative and the knowledgeable comments. Love both these pots and your exciting plans ahead.

cool work, what is it about pottery work that draws you to it?
16 Apr 2008 10:40pm
@Rags: In general what draws me to ceramics is that i'm drawn to making things with my hands.
In other peoples pottery work - i'm drawn to a more asymmetrical hap-hazard kind of feel. I like work that has a flow to it, but at the same time looks like they may have just squashed, poked or prodded it that way. I also am more drawn to a less controled look of glazing style. I really like the results of pit and raku firings. For they are hard to know what one is going to get - ya know - you get a smokey line here and one there all because of which way the pine needles and newspaper gathered.
Rabbit! These are my favorite taste!! This pink is perfect for me....cherry blossom pink!:)
